Global Awards for Excellence
About the ULI Global Awards for Excellence
The ULI Global Awards for Excellence recognize projects that provide the best cross-regional lessons in land use practices. Up to five global winners may be named each year—chosen from among the year’s winning projects in the Americas, Europe, and Asia Pacific—by a select jury of international members.
2011 Winners
Ed Roberts Campus
Berkeley, CA
Ed Roberts Campus

Conceived by a consortium of partners committed to serving people with disabilities, the Ed Roberts Campus is an international center for the Independent Living Movement. The inclusive facility was constructed using universal design principles and provides mutually supportive office space, a child-care center, and direct access to a Bay Area Rapid Transit station.

New World Center
Miami Beach, Florida
New World Center

The New World Center is an innovative facility for classical music education and performance that stands at the intersection of architecture, technology, education, and culture. A 80-foot-high glass-and-steel box contains the free-flowing theater space, while the front facade—which doubles as a projection wall—displays concerts and video art to patrons in an adjacent park.

The Pinnacle @ Duxton
Singapore
Pinnacle at Duxton

The Pinnacle at Duxton is a series of seven 50-story towers connected by two continuous and open skybridges. The sustainable residential project, with green roofs, sky gardens, and built using modular construction, is home to 7,400 residents—many of them young families—and helps to redefine urban high density living in Singapore.

Westfield San Francisco Centre
San Francisco, California
Westfield SF Center

After an eight-year development process, Westfield San Francisco Centre has restored the city’s historic Emporium building, boasting 1.5 million square feet of commercial space and attracting an estimated 25 million visitors to this once-distressed area of San Francisco.

Wolverton Park
Milton Keynes, United Kingdom
Wolverton Park

This historic former rail yard has been redeveloped to provide 300 mixed-tenure homes, alongside commercial space, community facilities, and a 2.5-acre park. Two new buildings complement three rehabilitated historic structures, providing a variety of housing solutions for the local community.

Global Awards Jury
As three renowned and informed juries already have chosen winners that meet ULI criteria for awards, the Global Awards jury uses slightly different and additional criteria in identifying projects that:
  • Establish innovative concepts or standards for development that can be emulated around the world;
  • Show strong urban design qualities;
  • Respond to the context of the surrounding environment;
  • Demonstrate awareness of issues contributing to a universally desirable configuration of development, such as: sustainable development, environmental responsibility, pedestrian-friendly design, smart growth practices, and development around transit; and
  • Demonstrate relevance to the present and future needs of the community in which they are located.
