Leadership Development Opportunities at the Urban Land Institute

The members of the Urban Land Institute are community builders, the people who develop and redevelop neighborhoods, business districts, and communities across the U.S. and around the world.

To create a sustainable urban future, ULI encourages, challenges, and engages those working in private enterprise and public service to be leaders in their communities, their fields, and the Institute.

As leadership is a calling, not a career, we support our members in this endeavor.  A number of tools have been developed both for those beginning their careers as well as CEOs of growing companies:

CEO Leadership Roundtables

ULI has conducted roundtables, limiting attendance to 30 real estate executives, to exchange information and build leadership skills. Summaries are published in Urban Land magazine. The web site also features flip chart transcripts and biographies of participants from each event.

ULI Career Center

ULI teamed up with the best Web-based service for access to real estate job listings, SelectLeaders.com, to power the Institute's job board. By participating in this network, members get maximum visibility and a reliable service.

Customized Leadership Programs

ULI offers a wide range of customized programs giving clients complete control over the format, location, and topics explored. These customized solutions address unique industry concerns and are based on ULI’s extensive experience. Best industry practices are followed throughout. For more information, contact David Mulvihill at mulvihil@uli.org.

ULI Bookstore

ULI publishes a variety of books, pamphlets, tapes and CDs, such as Leadership Legacies: Lessons Learned from Ten Real Estate Legends. Tools for community outreach, such as Community Catalyst reports, are available at cost in the Bookstore and can be downloaded at no cost.

Leadership Essentials Audio Programs

Available at no cost online at iTunes, these programs are also sold through the ULI Bookstore in CD format. Hear interviews with speakers at ULI meetings and roundtables, as well as management experts with proven techniques for leading an organization. The online archive now has more than 150 interviews.

Young Leaders—Learning By Doing

Those under 35 years of age qualify for a variety of opportunities, including membership in Young Leader Groups in local District Councils. These members organize programs, head up community outreach initiatives, share experience in Partnership Forums—developing professional skills and business relationships. In addition to qualifying for lower cost dues, Young Leaders also attend the ULI Fall Meeting and other events at significantly reduced fees. Special programs on Careers in Real Estate and small scale development provide targeted educational and networking opportunities.

Experienced Leaders—Advancing Policy and Practice

ULI attracts the best and the brightest, working in private enterprise and the public interest, worldwide. ULI Full Members are the leaders in real estate development, investment, and professional services. Most Full Members are also members of a Council—forums for information exchange on the state-of-the-art in the development field. ULI currently has 44 Domestic and 8 Global Councils, focusing on 24 areas of activity in development products, development processes, and international issues. Councils meet twice yearly at the Fall Meeting and Spring Council Forum. Institute trustees and District Council chairs are required to be Full Members, but steering committee positions are open to all members. For information on Full Membership and Councils, click here.
